The Way MMA’s Story.
Professor Joshua's martial arts journey began in childhood around age 7 with 2 years of Judo. Tang Soo Do was his second martial art starting around age 11, and reaching purple belt at age 16. In the early 90’s, he saw the UFC and knew it was the truest testing ground for martial arts. Seeing the power of grappling, he joined the high school wrestling team, becoming the team captain and CIF runner-up.
In 2002, Joshua joined the San Diego Fight Club, training under former King of the Cage champion, Charlie Kholer. He competed in two amateur boxing matches before shifting his focus to MMA, training in Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, and making his pro MMA debut in 2006.
Between 2006 and 2009, Joshua amassed a record of 4-2 in Pro MMA. In 2009, he began traveling overseas, stopping in Thailand for Muay Thai training. His focus became more spiritual, however, and he would not return to MMA until his come back fight in 2014, finishing his Pro MMA career with a 5-2 record, and recieving his brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Charlie Kholer.
Later in 2014 Joshua sustained a serious injury while training for what would have been his second come-back fight, halting his training and causing him to question if he would ever return to serious training and get his black belt in BJJ. After 3 years of physical therapy, Joshua resumed consistent Jiu-Jitsu training in early 2018 under Alfredo Barum, receiving his black belt in late 2020.
Joshua has taught classes and coached intermittently since 1999 in Folkstyle Wrestling, since 2009 in Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai, began ramping up teaching private lessons in 2017, and went full time in 2019, opening his own program at a gymnastics gym. Certain events in 2020 made operating in a brick and mortar location difficult, so he expanded his private lessons by teaching remotely at clients' homes, and at parks.
In 2021 an opportunity opened up to hold group classes in the fellowship hall of a church in El Cajon. That is the main location where indoor small group classes are currently held, to which The Way MMA’s Google Maps profile is attached. Joshua still travels to locations most convenient for students for private lessons, and also holds small group classes at Lindbergh Park in Clairemont.
